Whatever happened to thin slice bread?

Whilst browsing the bread aisles of
Sainsbury's it suddenly occurred to me, "Whatever happened to thin slice
bread?"  I remember as a child when
shopping at the local supermarket for my mum being able to buy Thin, Medium and
Thick slice bread.  Thick slice was
always in a clear bread bag with a green stripe (if I remember rightly), medium
slice was with a red band and (this is where it gets a bit vague), thin slice
was with a white or yellow band on the pack?
Even better still, you could go to the Bakers shop and ask for your
bread to be sliced thinly!  So what
happened?  With the power of Google at my
fingertips, I typed in my search engine, "Whatever happened to thin slice
bread?" and did I get an answer? Kind of…!
I discovered that it wasn't only me looking for thin slice, although,
the other person looking wanted it for health reasons.  Anyway, after more searching and trawling
through the net, I found out that you can still get thin slice bread!  Unfortunately, as it's not widely available
this seems to give carte blanche to those selling it to charge a rather hefty
price for the privilege!  Anyway, I'm
sure you're reading this and thinking, "get on with it!" so here's a quick list
of places where you can buy thin slice bread:

www.breadshop.co.uk
- these people are fantastic, they slice your bread thinly, should you want it,
in any of their shops in Chiswick, St Albans, St Johns Wood, Brent cross or
Bluewater.

www.waitrose.com
- I love Waitrose supermarket, something for the more discerning shopper, they
have a great selection of food and drink so you don't have to travel into the
West End!  And they do a simple Waitrose
own brand brown thin slice for only 75p!

Of course, why not bake your own and enjoy
hot bread straight from the oven or let it cool and then slice it as thinly as
possible using a bread slicer?  Here are
my suggestions:

www.lakeland.co.uk/kenwood
- this is fantastic, you can slice wafer thin to thick and chunky and even use
it for your Sunday roast! And all for only £34.25.

www.amazon.co.uk/kitchen
- For a simpler hand held model with a a very friendly price tag of only £12.06
then Amazon have the Haden 10045  120w
Electric carving knife with comfort grip and serrated blade.
